HPGe Spectrometers [2]

For most quantitative and low-level applications, the HPGe detector must be shielded against external radiation from terrestrial and cosmic sources.
An effective shield is provided by a 10 cm thick layer of special very low-activity lead (Pb) encircling the detector head as shown in this picture.
The very heavy (ca. 1300 kg) shield sits on a solid steel table and the top rolling doors are easily moved for safe and easy access. Special “lead castles” with 15 cm thick walls (or more) or made of extremely low activity materials are also available.

The picture shows a modern NIM quadruple 100 MHz Wilkinson ADC with a webMATE multichannel analyzer attached to one output.
Using NIM electronics for high voltage, spectroscopy amplifier and ADC one makes use of the most stable and best resolution electronics available on the market.
Using Ethernet-based MCAs one makes use of the most modern handling techniques which allow to operate and control the MCA from every access point on the local network or through the Internet.
In critical applications or in small systems one may attach the MCA to a desktop or laptop PC for exclusive use as a stand-alone spectrometer and spectrum analyzer.
